When to Call Your Doctor

Know which symptoms need urgent attention and which are completely normal.

Call emergency services immediately

These signs need immediate medical attention. Do not wait.

  • 🌡️ Fever above 38°C (100.4°F) in a baby under 3 months
  • 🫁 Breathing that is very fast, very slow, or stops for more than 10 seconds
  • 💙 Blue or purple color on lips, tongue, or fingernails
  • 😵 Baby is limp and cannot be woken up
  • 🙅 Baby has a seizure (stiffens, shakes, or twitches)
  • 🩸 Heavy bleeding that does not stop

These signs are not emergencies, but need attention within the same day.

  • 💧 Fewer than 6 wet diapers per day after day 5
  • ⚖️ Baby has not regained birth weight by 2 weeks
  • 🟡 Yellow skin (jaundice) that is spreading below the belly button or below the knees
  • 🍼 Baby refuses to feed for more than 8 hours
  • 😭 Crying that lasts more than 3 hours and cannot be calmed
  • 👁️ Eye discharge that is yellow or green
  • 🦵 Swelling, redness, or discharge at the belly button or circumcision site
Normal

These are completely normal

New parents often worry about these. They do not need medical attention.

  • 😤 Grunting and straining during bowel movements
  • 🤧 Sneezing — babies sneeze to clear their nose
  • 😮 Hiccups — very common after feeds
  • 🧹 Peeling skin in the first 2 weeks
  • 👀 Crossed or wandering eyes in the first 2 months
  • 🫨 Startle reflex — sudden arm movements when startled
  • 🟡 Mild yellow skin (jaundice) in the first week that stays above the belly button
  • 💩 Dark greenish-black stool in the first 2 days (meconium)
